Vision of the first edition of Autostrada Biennale is revealed

Prishtina, 18 December 2016 –The National Gallery of Kosova, on Friday hosted an informal meeting with the chief curator of the first edition of Autostrada Biennale, Manray Hsu (Taipei, Taiwan).

At this meeting, the Autostrada Biennale team, jointly with the chief curator, revealed the vision for the first edition of Autostrada Biennale.

Leutrim Fishekqiu, from Autostrada Bienale pointed out that this biennale has been established with the mission to enhance culture and revitalize community: “It plans to highlight social, political, economic and aesthetic conditions, which also influence everyday life beyond the art world - to make the city as a museum itself is a site of contemporaneity. A place in where local experiences of time subvert the unity of embracing and inventing its own time.”

This meeting marked the completion of ten days residence in Kosova of chief curator of the first edition of Autostrada Biennale, Manray Hsu. For Hsu, this is the first time in Kosova, an experience he described as ''culture shock", while praising in particular the young people he met and their energy.

Manray Hsu considered Autostrada Biennale as one of the most challenging projects in his career:“Autostrada Biennale concept is an utopic one, but not a fiction. My idea for the first edition will be a combination of works and interventions in which locals and visitors are involved to reflect on, interrogate and visualize the city and beyond. The histories of Prizren and Kosovo have increased my interest in how some parts of the world that are considered apart, want to join the map of world events”.

The first edition of biennale which will be held on August and September 2017 in Prizren, aims to strengthen and expand the contemporary art scene in the country and region, with the main objectives: re-functionalization of the cultural heritage spaces, to establish a program of formal and informal education through contemporary art and to increase the level of cooperation of the contemporary art scene in the country, the region and beyond through debate and critical thinking.

Autostrada Biennale plans to make the city and the citizen a very important part of its organizations, involving them in the building of Autostrada Biennale. Together with the citizens, this biennale will create new spaces of exhibition, informal education, discussion and reflection - stimulating in this way the freedom of expression, cultural exchange, and critical thinking with the aim to cultivate wider Contemporary art audience in Kosova.

Autostrada Bienale could be an initiative for the use of alternative spaces for organizing various events within contemporary art and it will serve as the promotion of spaces and old buildings that have the value of cultural heritage and collective memory. It will try to raise civic awareness on the importance of collaboration - re functionalizing private and public buildings, which belongs to citizens and the city of Prizren.

Supporters of residential program for curator are: Swiss Cooperation Office, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Prishtina Municipality, Prizren Municipality and National Gallery of Kosova.
