In the spirit of cooperation, fellowship and solidarity, Autostrada Biennale and Manifesta 14 Prishtina, two art biennials operating currently in Kosovo, are excited to announce a partnership which will present two socially engaged, public artworks in Prishtina in July 2021.
Autostrada Biennale and Manifesta 14 Prishtina are currently both preparing its future editions for the summer 2021 and autumn 2022, despite the harsh circumstances. We believe that especially during these constraining times, two art biennials situated in Kosovo should stand in solidarity and cooperation. With that in mind we are pleased to announce our partnership. The 3rd Autostrada Biennale will open in Prishtina on the 1st of July 2021, with two major art commissions for the public space in collaboration and support from Manifesta 14 and with various local organisations; then in Prizren on July 17th and in Peja on July 21st. It is curated by Övül Ö. Durmuşoğlu and Joanna Warsza.
“Autostrada Biennale started from its own locality in Prizren, Kosovo in 2017, built on a feeling of need for more cultural exchange through contemporary art in the Western Balkans. The pandemic demanded us to rethink the Biennale model and its role in infrastructure building, and for this we cannot be more enthusiastic to join forces with Manifesta 14. In this way, we will further work with our objectives: very local, and yet very connected.”
Vatra Adnan Abrashi, Leutrim Fishekqiu, Barış Karamuço / Autostrada Biennale Co-founders
“At this very particular moment in time, when the world is still in a lock down and everything remains to be at a standstill due to the global pandemic, there is a demand for new methodologies, new ways of working together and an intensive focus on creating local sustainable projects. Manifesta currently feels that supporting local projects in Kosovo, starting with our support towards Autostrada Biennale’s Prishtina chapter, stimulates a cultural economy of generosity and sharing above developing solely another Manifesta edition with monolithic curated exhibitions. Acts of solidarity with existing institutions in Kosovo and creating sustainable impact for local communities will be a manner in which to reanimate global biennials in a post Covid period.”
Hedwig Fijen, Founding Director Manifesta
“Working on the biennale during the pandemic has made us realize that art today is foremost a form of recovery, and a way of overcoming isolation. We see our collaboration as a form of resilience”
Övül Ö. Durmusoglu and Joanna Warsza curators of the 3rd Edition of Autostrada Biennale
Autostrada Biennale and Manifesta 14 Prishtina will collaborate during the curation and implementation of public programmes related to these artworks and respective exhibitions. The two art organisations have chosen an exemplary stance in solidarity during the continuing pandemic, inviting the citizens of Pristina to take part in respective productions.
