Anita Muçolli

Artist: Anita Muçolli

Venue: SHANI EFENDI HOUSE GAZI MEHMED PASHA HAMMAM

*1993 in Burgdorf, Switzerland, lives and works in Basel, Switzerland

Anita Muçolli’s artistic practice relates to socio-economic developments such as the marginalization of death and emotional spaces in Western culture, and analyzes the numerous ways collective and individual fear is expressed and passed on. She delves into the various narratives that accompany this process of externalization, with a focus on the subliminal behavioral patterns of the psyche that emerge in times of crisis, and how these are linked to social repression. How do people in the 21st century deal with the inevitable, and what global impact do their strategies of avoidance have? The far-reaching consequences of human decisions for humans and other species form the core of her artistic research.

In her choice of media, Anita Muçolli untiringly pushes the boundaries of the materials she uses. In doing so, she uses centuries-old crafts as well as new technologies, and often brings them together: Machine and handcraft unite in her works and establish a new field of tension, while questioning conventional modes of creation. In her installations, she considers the spatial conditions and often integrates the architecture of the exhibition venue into her works.

She has exhibited in various group shows, including at Kunsthaus Baselland, Kunsthaus Langenthal, Kunsthalle Palazzo, Liestal, Museo Villa dei Cedri, Bellinzona, The National Gallery of Kosovo, Pristina, Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster, Gallery Von Bartha, Basel, Swiss Art Awards, Basel, and at Le Commun, Geneva. Her first solo show was held at Sattelkammer, Bern, followed by Liste Art Fair, Basel, Kulturfolger, Zurich, and the Centre d’Art Contemporain, Yverdon.

She was awarded the Manor Art Prize 2026 of the Canton of Bern, the Helvetia Art Prize 2021, is amongst the laureates of the Kiefer I Hablitzel Göhner Art Prize 2022, and was nominated for the Swiss Art Awards 2024 and the Shizuko Yoshikawa Award 2024.
