Autostrada Hangar is the result of our vision, journey, and commitment to making contemporary art accessible to everyone. Founded in 2014 by Leutrim Fishekqiu, Vatra Abrashi, and Barış Karamuço, Autostrada Biennale was born from a desire to create a space where art could coexist with everyday life and resonate with people from all walks of life.
In 2017, we launched the first edition of the Biennale in Prizren—a city with no gallery space and limited exposure to contemporary art. What began as a bold idea quickly became a vital part of the region’s cultural landscape, offering a platform for global artists to connect with the local community and making art something that belonged to everyone.
As the Biennale grew, we recognized the need for a permanent space to create, collaborate, and engage year-round. In 2020–2021, we transformed a former German KFOR military hangar into Autostrada Hangar – Center for Contemporary Art—a venue for exhibitions, workshops, performances, and public programs that bring the community together.
Sustainability has always been at the heart of our mission. Half of the materials used to construct both Hangars were repurposed from past Biennale editions, reinforcing our commitment to eco-consciousness and resourcefulness. The space was designed for flexibility, with movable elements that adapt to each event and program.
Located within the ITP – Innovation and Training Park in Prizren, Autostrada Hangar is a true center for creation, featuring state-of-the-art production facilities for wood, metal, and textile work. It’s a space where collaboration and creativity thrive—providing artists with the tools to bring their works to life and share them with the world.
In 2024, we expanded further with the opening of a second Hangar, offering additional production space, an open theater, and artist residencies. This expansion deepened our commitment to artists and increased opportunities for the public to engage with the creative process.
During the Biennale, Autostrada Hangar serves as the central hub for public programs, inviting visitors to engage directly with art through guided tours, performances, and workshops. These programs encourage connection, reflection, and experiencing art in new ways.
As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Autostrada Biennale, we invite you to explore a retrospective exhibition that reflects on our journey and the transformative power of art in our lives and communities.
Autostrada Hangar is not just an exhibition space—it’s a place to pause, connect, and reflect. Whether enjoying a meal in our vegetarian kitchen, sipping coffee in our café, exploring local creations in our shop, or delving into contemporary art literature in our library, we offer a welcoming space for everyone. Open to all, it’s where art and people come together to spark meaningful conversations and continue the journey.
