Ghosts of Our Skin (2025)

Turning toward the site’s eroded symbolic function, Anita Muçolli presents a site-specific installation reflecting on its transformation from a place of communal purification to a silent architectural shell. By engaging with the structure as both witness and remnant, Muçolli evokes the human body as a fossilized, deformed trace—caught between memory and speculation. This quiet meditation on absence and transformation not only explores the fading of cultural rituals but also highlights the lingering presence they continue to exert on collective memory. Together, these three artists bring a compelling mix of presence, absence, and transformation to the Hammam, engaging in a collective act of reimagining its place in contemporary consciousness.
Muçolli artistic practice relates to socio-economic developments such as the marginalization of death and emotional spaces in Western culture, and analyzes the numerous ways collective and individual fear is expressed and passed on. She was awarded the Manor Art Prize 2026 of the Canton of Bern, the Helvetia Art Prize 2021, is amongst the laureates of the Kiefer I Hablitzel Göhner Art Prize 2022, and was nominated for the Swiss Art Awards 2024 and the Shizuko Yoshikawa Award 2024.
