Rivane Neuenschwander (b. 1967) lives and works in São Paulo.
Eu desejo o seu desejo (I wish your wish) (2003)
Rivane Neuenschwander’s Eu desejo o seu desejo (I wish your wish) draws inspiration from the tradition at São Salvador’s church in Bahia, Brazil, where visitors tie colored ribbons to their wrists while making wishes, believing that the wishes will come true when the ribbons eventually break. In this installation, Neuenschwander prints the wishes of sixty people onto thousands of ribbons, which are then hung for visitors to choose and wear, adopting someone else’s desire. Visitors are also invited to write their own wishes on slips of paper and place them in the wall, allowing the work to grow and evolve with each new interaction. Through this process, Neuenschwander invites the audience to become active participants, constantly weaving new hopes and aspirations into the installation.
Since the 1990s, Neuenschwander chooses elements of consumer goods, social exchange and memories as her practice’s materials. The artist’s work is featured in important public collections, including Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City, Mexico; MACBA – Museu d ́Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain; MAM – Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brasil; MoMA – The Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; Tate Modern, London, UK; TBA – Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Vienna, Austria and the Solomon R.
