Small But Dangers (b. 1977) lives and works in Cerkno.
Tears (2015)
Tears (2015) by Small but Dangers reimagines men’s cotton handkerchiefs by tautening them onto wooden frames, transforming their straight borders into wavy patterns. This subtle alteration disrupts the handkerchief’s traditional “empty” whiteness, unveiling its potential to challenge the aesthetics of everyday life. The piece critiques masculinity, minimalism, and societal norms, turning the handkerchief into a fragmented vessel of memory and emotion. By filling the gaps left in the fabric, viewers are invited to reflect on identity, class, and the politics of form.
Small But Dangers is a collage of three words that describes a collaboration between two people in the field of contemporary art, Mateja Rojc and Simon Hudolin. They work in tandem since the beginning of their careers in 2004, after graduating from the College for Painting in Ljubljana. In 2017, they were the recipients of the OHO Group Award. In 2013, SBD and Matija Brumen were awarded the second prize in the Photography of the Year 2013 Competition. SBD has also received the VIG Special Invitation Award as part of the 2015 Essl Art Award CEE and the 2019–2022 Award for the Best Artist Book in Slovenia.
