Nathan Gray and The Juluwarlu Group Aboriginal Corporation are the featured artists in the 4th edition of Autostrada Biennale. During the opening weekend of the event, we had the opportunity to host an artist talk with Nathan Gray and a representative from The Juluwarlu Group Aboriginal Corporation at the Autostrada Biennale headquarters.
Founded in the late 1980s, Juluwarlu Group Aboriginal Corporation exemplifies what curator Margot Neal (Centre for Indigenous Knowledges) refers to as the “third archive.”
The collaboration between Juluwarlu and Nathan Gray began as a radio project during an artist residency in the Pilbara. The project draws from interviews with Yindjibarndi elders, whose autobiographies are read by their descendants, framing a historical period marked by resistance against land dispossession, oppression, and colonial violence. These experiences have inspired their art, which is currently part of the exhibitions in the 4th edition of Autostrada Biennale.
During the artist talk, we had the privilege of firsthand insights into the collaborative process between Nathan Gray and The Juluwarlu Group Aboriginal Corporation. They shared their struggles and the creative journey behind their art piece titled “ERA OF THE ELDERS, 2023.”
