Postane is a space for social impact and ecological restoration, located in the renovated British Post Office in Galata, Istanbul. We serve and collaborate with agencies that aim to build a more just neighborhood, city, region, and planet. Our work includes offering spatial, technical, and financial resources, and collaborating with civil society organizations, activists, social enterprises, artists, and creatives. 

Run by a social enterprise based on a solidarity economy, Postane features a social procurement cafe, a podcast studio, a multipurpose hall and a rooftop permaculture garden.

About the Panel Discussion
When we think of restoration, culturally significant buildings often come to mind first. We tend to focus on these structures, measuring our success by how accurately we can recreate aspects of the past. However, restoring culture encompasses much more than just buildings. The decision of what is deemed worthy of restoration and what is not is inherently political. Restoration can either bring the rich diversity of life to the surface or, conversely, bury it forever—depending on how we navigate the tension between the technical and the political.

Restoration is as much about people and nature as it is about buildings. Buildings are created by, inhabited by, and remembered by people, leaving traces that can be discovered if we look closely. These structures form connections between people, serving as more than just brick and mortar; they are integral to our environment. By restoring culture, we have the potential to revive not only buildings but also the relationships and nature intertwined with them.
